Healing properties of wormwood tree of God
Wormwood God's tree healing properties and contraindications
Legends about the healing properties of the tree of God are passed down from generation to generation.
It was grown in the gardens at the monasteries. Perhaps this is connected with the name of the wormwood - God's tree or church grass. Another version that the word "wormwood" in Greek means "healthy." This again indicates the healing properties of the plant. The juice of the plant was part of the balms and ointments, which were used for the treatment of wounds and as a remedy for insect bites. The healing properties of wormwood are due to the fact that it contains essential oils, including citral. Citral has a pleasant lemon scent and has antiseptic properties.
In addition, the juice and leaves of the tree of God are used to make infusions, balms, and teas. Infusion is treated for sore throat, and tea helps improve appetite. Sometimes the plant is used in its natural form. For example: from grass, steamed in boiling water, make lotions that treat sprains and bruises. And the hair, rinsed with a decoction of stems and leaves, grow better and have a healthy look.
If a tree of God grows on your land, you can dry it and get medicinal raw materials. For drying use green, not stiff shoots or shoots with unopened buds. Preparation of raw materials can be made from July to September. Cut off shoots in dry windless weather and dried in the shade. The bitterness of the plant, characteristic of all species of wormwood, is absent in a dry plant. The dried plant has a pleasant lemon smell.
Before storing the plant stems can be crushed. So it will be more convenient to use it in the future. For storage of the obtained raw materials use hermetic containers. This will allow to preserve the aroma of the plant for a long time. But if you are not sure that the plant is perfectly dried, it is better to put it in a paper bag for a while and dry it. Perhaps the flavor will become weaker, but the raw material will not deteriorate.

How often to water the wormwood tree
Decorative wormwood is a drought-resistant plant, so it does not need frequent watering. Enough to water the plant in the first days after planting. To maintain decorative beauty can be watered on hot summer days once every two weeks.
Under each bush is recommended to pour 3-4 liters of water at room temperature.
Pruning and forming wormwood
Wormwood is a tree of God, the cultivation of which even a beginning gardener can grow, can be a wonderful decoration of a garden. The bush is very stable and does not require special pruning. But if you want your site to have a beautiful plant of a compact form, then you need to constantly form a crown.
To do this, the shoots are cut, not allowing them to grow more than 60 centimeters in height. Thus it turns out the original, spherical bush. After the first pruning, shoots begin to grow evenly and only need to adjust their height occasionally.
Beautiful gray leaves perfectly stand out against the background of green plants of the garden or any land.
Wormwood God's Tree
Being unfamiliar with this plant personally, I was attracted to him like a magnet - the name “God's tree” fascinated me.
“Why is the tree and why is God?” I thought, while by correspondence acquaintance from literature I knew that the people call one of the types of wormwood - medical wormwood (Artemisia abrotanum). According to the botanical description, it is a perennial shrub up to 1.5 m in height, with three times pinnate leaves on straight semi-woody stems and a thick woody root.
Wormwood is a tree of God originating from southern Europe, Asia Minor, and Iran. Wormwood has long been cultivated in Russia. We also know it under the names wormwood lemonade, abrotane, oak grass, chicken (Belarus), treeless, cudraw, holy tree.
Interestingly, in the literature of the nineteenth century (reference book "Complete Russian dictionary-herbalist", published in 1898, and the manual Schroeder RI "Russian garden, nursery and orchard", published in 1877) says: "Wormwood The treatment in Russia is only divorced in gardens. ” And in the academic edition of the twentieth century "Flora of the USSR" (v. XXVI, p. 423) it is noted that it is found in nature in southern Russia, the Black Soil Region, the South of Western Siberia, and Central Asia. That is, over several centuries, it spread from gardens to nature and became a naturalized Russian woman.

In all editions it is noted that wormwood paniculture (Artemisia scoparia or Artemisia procera) is widespread in Russia, it looks like curative wormwood. It is also cultivated in the gardens under the names of bodrennik, chiliga, wormwood, walkworm, and also ... God's tree. This causes some confusion.
It is necessary to distinguish between the “real” God's tree - it is medical wormwood, from the “unreal” - wormwood is paniculata.
The latter, in the first place, is malonely (most often biennial), and secondly, “in all parts there is a coarser and less pleasant smell”. And, thirdly, it should be noted that wormwood paniculata propagates by seed, while at the curative they do not ripen in Russia. Therefore, if you are offered the seeds of God's tree, now you will know which one - the “unreal”.
In view of the latter circumstance, it is not easy to make God's present tree, since it reproduces only vegetatively - by dividing the rhizome, layering, cuttings. A lot of work cost me to find this plant. Some of my gardening friends from different regions offered saplings, but I preferred to write out from the northern - Kirov - region, since I was not aware of the cold resistance of this plant.
Sapling planted in a garden with fertile soil in a sunny place. Over the summer, he gave up to a dozen branches with a height of about 80 cm. Fears about his winter-hardiness were in vain - the plant had a good winter over two winters without any shelter. In the spring, every time on lignified stems all the buds come to life, except for the topmost ones. As befits a dwarf shrub, nevzrevshie tops die off. From the buds and from the roots grow new green shoots.

Observing the plant and tasting it, I understood why it was called God's. Indeed, it is a gift from God! The plant is remarkably beautiful - all summer and autumn to real frost is green with curly, like dill, greens. The taste and aroma is very complex, but pleasant, in which there is a freshness of lemon and pine bitterness.
In the old days, the leaves were “used in medicine to improve the taste of various unpleasant medicines.” And what then to talk about improving the taste of ordinary food! Young leaves are used in salads, in sauces for roasts and in seasonings for soups (entered 3 minutes before readiness), for flavoring tea, alcoholic beverages, vinegar, added to the dough when baking bread and pastry, to give spicy flavor to cakes, cottage cheese, mayonnaise. In addition, the leaves can be dried for future use. By the way, if someone does not like bitterness (albeit a pleasant one), then it completely disappears when dried.
Much can be said about the benefits of God's tree on human health. It’s not for nothing that the scientific name of Artemisia wormwood comes from the Greek “artemis”, which means “health”. The leaves contain essential oil (up to 1.5% in the fresh mass), flavone compounds, alkaloid abratin and other useful substances.
In folk medicine, leaves are used for anemia, scrofula, irregular menstruation, worms, “abdominal pains, aching bones,” bladder inflammation, rinse your mouth with toothache, powder in the form of bruises, boils and sprains, root - with epilepsy and tuberculosis meningitis

Only one or two plants is enough to provide the family with spicy and medicinal raw materials. All the neighbors in the country, seeing this plant from me, wanted to have it on their own plots. And I had to master the technique of reproduction. God's tree is easily propagated by layering - it is enough to dig up the branches in May and from each form several independent plants.
It is also easily propagated by cuttings - in June it is necessary to cut cuttings about 10 cm long, clean the lower part of the leaves (leave only the top one) and stick it in the soil obliquely. By August the rooted seedling will be ready.
For other medicinal herbs and their beneficial properties, read the section “Medicinal plants” varieties with photos, cultivation and care, recipes for use in traditional medicine.
