Datura is quite capable of growing without human intervention, but some care activities still do not interfere, so that the flowering is more abundant and longer. These include:

  • regular watering, especially in dry summer,
  • mineral dressing in spring and summer.

Some flower growers dig up a bush for the winter, plant it in a pot and put it in a room. In this case, you need to fall in the fall to cut the shoots, forming a crown.

Description: varieties and varieties of dope grass

Datura is an annual shrub with a shoot length of 1-1.5 m in open ground. It grows more in width than in length. The plant is densely covered with foliage green-gray shade. The young bush in the photo resembles eggplant seedlings.

Common dope varieties:

  • Ordinary - huge leaves and white flowers,
  • Indian - purple-white buds,
  • Indian - strongly expanding shrub with white petals and an unpleasant aroma.

With proper care dope forms a huge bells with a delicate aroma. They fade in less than a day. Flowering begins in early summer, it becomes massive only in August, and ends in October:

  1. First, the dope forms an escape length of about 30 cm.
  2. Escape forks and releases the bud. It gradually grows to 20-25 cm.
  3. After maturation, the bud quickly opens. The flower is a bell 15-20 cm in diameter.
  4. The color of flowers is usually white, sometimes with cream, lemon and other pastel shades.

Attention! The bud opens at dusk literally before our eyes and lives until the end of the morning chill.

Datura: planting plants

In the climate of the middle zone, the cultivation of grass dope is limited to frosty winters. Of course, you can practice maintenance and care in the house for 5-6 months. However, the usual sill for growing does not fit: only the spacious part of the room, an area of at least 1.5 square meters. m. Datura seedlings are planted in the open ground. This happens in May.

Planting seeds for seedlings carried out in March, but the soil is prepared in the fall. Substrate composition:

  • 40% of the sifted soil from the garden,
  • 40% of humus,
  • 20% coarse sand.

Pre-sort the seeds: put in a container with hot water for a few hours. Floated specimens are not suitable for landing. Moisten the soil in the seedling box and slightly deepen the seeds. Maintain room temperature and soil moisture, cover the pot with a sheet of plain paper and wait for seedlings in 2-3 weeks.

After their appearance:

  1. Move the container to a cool and bright place.
  2. Dive the plant after forming a pair of true leaves. Planting at a new place is made on the height of the cotyledons.
  3. In the open ground, even a compost or dung heap will work fine for the dope. The main thing is to pick up a well-warmed, windless place on the site.
  4. Plant the seedlings with an interval of not less than 1 m. The width of the fossa is 50 cm, the depth is 70 cm.
  5. Lay a drainage layer on the bottom.
  6. Datura blooms 20-25 days after planting.

Caring for dope

The varieties of this culture are unpretentious in matters of irrigation, fertilizer, care. In order for the flower to grow and develop normally, keep the soil loose and moist. You can periodically make wood ash. Watering dope 3-4 p. in Week. Dry summer is possible more often. In winter, watering indoors is reduced to 1 p. in Week.

Council Use for watering hard water.

In the dope bloom only young shoots. In autumn, all old ones should be pruned. In addition, so you can form a crown of shrubs. In the period of active flowering, remove drooping buds.

Fertilizer and fertilizer Datura

Part of the plant care procedure is to support the nutritional value of the soil:

  1. In the spring and summer, before blooming, once a week, fertilize organic fertilizer with organic matter in combination with mineral complexes (in a week).
  2. In winter, the plant in the tank does not need feeding. If the soil is acidic, water it every spring with a solution of lime: 1 g per 1 liter of water.

Plant reproduction at home

In the case of datur, reproduction by seeds or cuttings is used. To collect the seed, remove the seed boxes after the first flowers wither. For 2 months they should be put in a dry and dark place. Make sure the box does not crack, and the seeds do not fall into the ground. A shrub in this way willingly produces self-sowing reproduction.

For grafting cut off part of the shoot with a pair of internodes. Further:

  • cut all large leaves in half,
  • prepare light soil
  • soak the stalk in the root stimulator.

Council Propagation by cutting is usually carried out in September or in the middle of March, with spring planting on the site.

Diseases and pests dope-grass

Since the plant is poisonous, most fungal infections and pests on it simply do not survive. Sometimes on the leaves of the plant can be found whitefly or spider mite. From these pests will help get rid of preventive spraying Bordeaux liquid, in May or June. If signs of insect reproduction are already present, treat the plant with a special fungicide.

Externally, the datur can wither and look unhealthy and with improper care. For example, when growing in a cool or too shady place, the wrong watering.

Datura: combination with other plants

Crouching along the ground dope has excellent decorative properties. If there is a support, he can braid it, rising by 1-2 meters. It will be nice to visit the green area in the evening or show friends in the photo. Datur of different varieties is used in flower beds to replace early flowering perennials in the composition.

In combination with other flower cultures, culture is rarely used. Is that combining different varieties with plants in color. In the dope, gardeners appreciate later on abundant flowering and unpretentiousness in the process of growth.

Datura harmless: description

The name speaks for itself. This plant is completely harmless.

Harmless plant species has a high level of branching:

  • This culture is characterized by the presence of taproot, it is characterized by branching and power.
  • The plant has petiolate leaves, characterized by a solid or slightly wavy edge, asymmetry of the plate, large size.
  • Height is approximately 60-140 centimeters.

  • The corollas of the flower are characterized by the presence of folded wide-angle blades, as well as fragrant. The size of the long and narrow corolla tube can reach 7-15 centimeters.

Growing a dope

Growing this plant is a fairly simple process, it can be done even by a beginner florist. For growing this grass is best to pick up a bunch of compost or manure.

This crop is propagated with the help of seeds:

  • Planting seeds should be done in March.
  • Why it is desirable to choose a plastic container.
  • A small layer of peat should be poured at the bottom of the plastic baklazhek, then it is covered with a mixture of sand and garden soil.
  • The rising of the seeds begins to happen already twelve days later.
  • To protect the garden culture from a fungal infection, add potassium permanganate solution to the seedling container.
  • The soil must be wet, but at the same time it is necessary to prevent stagnation of water. Since this can lead to decay of the root system.
  • Planting this plant in the open ground is made in early spring.
  • Moreover, the distance between plants must be at least one meter. This is due to the fact that if the bushes are close to each other to plant, then they can have rather weak inflorescences and stems. During the dense planting of the dope, it may not bloom at all. Plant dope need annually in black soil.

Datura flower can be affected by such a disease as rot. This disease appears due to excessive moisture of the earth. During the first symptoms of this disease, everything possible should be done to dry the soil. Datura can also be affected by parasites such as the whitefly and the spider mite.

At the time of the appearance of these parasites, the dope bush should be treated with appropriate preparations.

Caring for dope is pretty simple. During the implementation of all the recommendations for the care you can get quite a beautiful plant that can decorate any landscape design. When choosing a dope, it is advisable to give preference to non-toxic varieties that do not have a negative impact on the human body. If you need to scare away rats and various rodents with this plant, then Indian Datura is the best option.

What does a datur plant look like?

Daturats - herbaceous annuals or short-lived perennials, growing up from 0.5-1 to 2 m.

Long leaf leaves are alternately arranged on bare, erect pagons, extending from the forked branching stem.

Leaf plates of ovate-pointed form, with whole or jagged edges, reach 15 cm in length, about 10 cm in width. On the outer side they are painted in dark emerald color, lighter in tone from the bottom.

They have clearly appearing whitish veins - the main and lateral of the first order.

The single funnel-shaped flowers of the dope with an elongated tube are large, they are formed in the forks of the pagons. Their colors range from white to yellow, pink and pale purple.

The fruit is a prickly oval chetyrehgnezdnaya capsule with numerous spikes, after ripening, dry or fleshy, easily splits into 4 chambers or does not open on its own.

Types and varieties of dope: description with photo

Different sources provide different information on the number of species in the genus - some call them 13, others - 9.

Probably, this discrepancy is associated with the transfer of some species to the Brugmansia genus, whose representatives are very similar to the datur, for example, in the old botanical publications the tree-like dope (Datura arborea) was mentioned, now it is known by another name of one of the species of the genus Brugmancia.

Their main difference is in the arrangement of flowers on the shrub: in Brugmansia, they are drooping down, in the dope they are vertically upward or slightly inclined to the side.

In decorative floriculture of an open ground types and varieties are popular:

Datura ordinary (Datura stramonium) - the name of the plant is translated from ancient Greek as "insane nightshade" and assigned K.Laynay.

Distributed throughout Europe, in Russia, Ukraine, Belarus has many popular names - stupid potion, divderevo, stupid grass, bodyacon, prickly apples and others.

Annual with a height of about one and a half meters with a strong taproot and bare, branched fork, pagonami, tending vertically upwards.

The leaves are large, large-toothed along the edge, dark green color on the upper side, lighter in the lower one.

Flowers solitary, located on the tops of pagons, in the axils of the leaves or in branching stems.

Corolla gramophone, pure white, emit a strong heady aroma.

The fruit is an elliptical box, spiked with spiky thorns, and revealed by four leaves.

There are a lot of seeds inside - from 500 to 800 pieces, they are kidney-shaped and black in color.

Datura Indian (Datura metel), a synonym - the magnificent datura (Datura fastuosa) - the specific name received from the place of the most widespread distribution.

In India, it is considered the flower of Shiva and according to the sacred texts of Hinduism grew out of the breast of this deity.

The area is vast - from China to the Caspian Sea, throughout Central Asia and the Caucasus.

Annual grassy shrub in height from 60 to 120 cm with large asymmetrical leaves on long petioles. Края широкояйцевидных пластинок ровные, но могут быть немного волнистыми.

Цветы крупные воронковидные, белоснежные либо бледно-лиловые, венчики около 20 см в длину.

The fruit is a spherical capsule, covered with thin spines, with bright yellow seeds.

The species became the basis for breeding and gave a variety of varieties and hybrids with amazingly beautiful lemon yellow, purple or purple flowers, simple or terry.

The most well-known Ballerina variety variety (Datura metel Balerina) is a popular hybrids with tight funnel-shaped flowers that have a purple throat.

Popular plants in this series:

Datura Metel Ballerina Parple (Datura metel Ballerina Purple) - with purple semi-double flowers funnels with white edges,

  • Datura broom ballerina mix - a mixture of different varieties of the Ballerina series,
Datura Metel Ballerina Yellow (Datura metel Ballerina Yellow) - with yellow-lemon gramophone flowers.

Other equally spectacular varieties with double flowers, commonly known under the common trade name Datura Terry, for example, Datura Datura Purple Knight, Datura Yellow Knight, Datura Pink Mist, whose names indicate the color of the rims.

Datura hybrid Medea

Of particular interest to flower growers is the Medea hybrid, the rarest shrub of 60-80 cm in height for domestic gardens with giant flowers of dazzling white color up to 20 cm long. It blooms almost all summer until frost.

Datura is Indian or harmless (Datura inoxia) - it grows in nature in South and Central America, but has been introduced across all continents, with the exception of Antarctica.

Annual shrub height from 0.6 to 1.5 m with grayish pubescence of the stem and leaves. The plates are oval, entire.

Flowers are spectacular, funnel-shaped, with a long tube, snow-white, are formed in the forks of the branches, first directed vertically upwards, then wilted. Fruits - spiny ovoid capsules up to 5 cm long.

The whole plant, even with minor damage, emits a disgusting smelly smell that resembles spoiled peanut butter. However, the fragrance of flowers, blooming closer to the night, many find quite pleasant.

Fragrant dope (Datura suaveolens), currently attributed to another genus called Brugmansia fragrant or fragrant Brugmansia (Brugmansia suaveolens) is an evergreen shrub plant with erect shoots.

The leaves are arranged alternately along the branches, the plates are oblong-ovate, entire, pointed at the apex.

Flowers white, axillary, drooping, funnel-tubular.

The fruit is a juicy berry. The terry form is popular.

Features landing dope

The place for datura in the garden is warm and sunny. The plant is not afraid of exposure to direct sunlight and can withstand high temperatures of summer heat.

However, drafts do not tolerate the flower, therefore, it is desirable to plant it in a corner of the garden protected from the wind.

The soil in the area where it is supposed to grow grassy shrubs should be well drained and moderately moist.

Datura prefers to grow more where the roots will be more dry than in a permanent swamp. In no case should the earth be acidic.

How to plant datur in open ground

In a flowerbed, the plant is grown from seeds sown either directly in the ground, or in early spring for seedlings, and then planted in the garden after the threat of the return of spring frosts.

Datur well and grafted, rooting occurs easily and relatively without any problems.

The pre-sowing preparation of planting material is as follows: seeds are poured with hot water at about 45-50 degrees and left to cool.

Some of them float up, they are immediately rejected, they will not give rise to shoots.

The others swell a little for 2-3 hours, they can be sown on the garden and in the pots, followed by transplanting to a flower bed.

How to sow seeds for seedlings and directly into open ground

The right time for sowing seeds for seedlings is the end of March, and right on the garden bed, depending on the climate around the beginning or middle of May.

Soil mixture for planting seedlings is prepared in the fall. Sifted garden soil and humus, taken in 2 parts, and 1 part of coarse-grained river sand, are suitable as components.

Datura seeds are laid out in shallow grooves and sprinkled with sand on top.

Crops covered with plastic wrap to ensure that the soil is constantly moistened until germination. Bowls put in a well-lit and warm place.

After 10-30 days, the first shoots appear. The pickup of the seedlings of the datura is made after the formation of two true leaves.

Seedlings are carefully seated in separate pots under the seed leaves and grown.

In the open ground transplanted at the end of May, keeping the distance between neighboring plants is not less than 1 m.

Datur is planted on a bed to a depth of no more than 10 cm, otherwise they simply will not climb. Bud formation will begin 3 weeks after sowing.

Grafting datura

Datura cuttings are rooted in soil mixtures or directly in the water.

In September, non-wood fragments of pagons with 2-3 internodes are cut off, the lower sheets are cut off.

The cut can be processed root, but not necessarily.

The plant and without additional auxiliary procedures grows roots well in conditions of moderately warm air temperature and with sufficient light.

In mid-May, an already well-grown seedling is planted in open ground, following the rules of agricultural engineering when planting seedlings.

Watering and feeding

From spring to autumn, throughout the growing season, dope is watered abundantly, especially during the formation of buds, it is impossible to allow the soil to dry out, otherwise they crumble without opening.

Periodically, the plant can be sprayed using a fine nozzle on a watering hose.

For irrigation, use only hard water, otherwise at least once per season dope is poured with lime milk at the rate of 10 g of lime in a bucket of water.

Overfeeding dope is impossible, because the plant itself is very powerful.

However, many sources, including foreign ones, caution against excessive organic matter, since the root zone of the shrub is susceptible to fungal infections.

But the mineral complex is recommended to fertilize from May until the end of August once a week or two, dissolving 20 g in a 10-liter bucket of water.

Correct pruning and wintering of datura

It is necessary to remove the flowered corollas in order to preserve the decorativeness of the plant and to stimulate the formation of new buds and the continuation of the flowering period of the shrub.

In temperate latitudes, the dope is grown as an annual, as it freezes in the open ground in winter.

However, some growers dig up valuable varietal specimens and transplant them into containers for wintering indoors.

To do this, they must be properly cut, not forgetting that only young shoots bloom on the plant. It is also important not to cut the flowering zone, distinguishing it from the growth zone.

Daturats planted in containers are kept in winter in a cool room with a temperature of no more than 15 and no less than 8 degrees heat.

Plants can throw off the leaves, but closer to the spring they grow them again on old shoots and on young ones.

Diseases and pests grass dope

The most common disease of the datura is gray rot.

It is difficult to fight it, it is easier when planting to carefully follow the rules of agrotechnology and not to thicken the plants in the garden, so that the full curvaceous crown does not block the air access to the base of the main stem.

Whiteflies and false spider mites are common pests of the dope.

Insect larvae are destroyed by systemic insecticides, and acaricides are used against ticks.

Datura - a combination with other plants in landscape design.

The plant is used in flower beds as a tapeworm and is planted in a prominent place.

The wide ridges along the footpath or monophonic groups against the background of shrubs or conifers are attractive from Datura.

Very often, a dope is planted in the neighborhood of early-flowering and withering perennials to cover the bald patch on the bed from unsightly dried plants.

Many flowers near the dope develop poorly, for example, the same marigolds or chamomile look very sad, planted nearby.

Datura is a controversial plant with beautiful flowers, poisonous seeds and leaves, as well as medicinal properties that have found use in traditional medicine.

To plant it on the site or to refuse this undertaking - each florist makes his own decision.

Cultivation and care

Datura grows better in sunny places, but cultivation is possible in partial shade. The soil requires nourishing, loose. Drainage is desirable. The plant is moisture-loving, regular watering is necessary. With weekly fertilizing complex fertilizers grow powerful bushes that have enough power to bloom abundantly. Pests do not attempt to datur.

Datur plant description

In the natural environment, the dope grows next to the shelter, on waste grounds, roadsides. The plant is considered a perennial evergreen shrub. In the climate of the middle zone, the dope is grown as an annual. Datura belongs to the common family of the Solanaceae (Solanaceae) class of dicotyledons (angiosperms). Its name is associated with the version of the word Datura, denoting "prickly" because of the peculiarities of the fruit of the dope, covered with prickles. Bushes have some differences.

Erect, hollow, complex trifoliate shape. The outer side of the stem is colored green, allowing for a red-violet hue at the base. The height of the stems can be 120 cm. With the long-term development of the bush, the lower parts of the stems become woody. On the trunks originate shoots with dark, oblong, alternately arranged leaves. Each process develops on the stem.

The length of the sheet reaches about 15 cm, width - about 10 cm. The surface of the sheet is smooth, dense, similar to the skin. The lower part of the sheet plate is painted in light shades. A light strip passes through the central vein. On the edges of the sheet are located clear teeth. Basal leaves are distinguished by smaller lanceolate-shaped, short petiole.

Shoots, flowers

Approximately 30 cm height of the stem begins to develop the first shoot. Here, the stem forks, making room for the appearance of a conical bud, the flower is formed as a long cone, gradually turning into a large funnel with a diameter of up to 20 cm. It opens only in the dark (sometimes in overcast weather) and lasts one night. The neighborhood is filled with an exotic smell. A week later, new flowers appear in the branches. The number of new flowers is constantly growing. General flowering occurs before the onset of autumn frosts.

Prickly box oblong dark green color. Inside there are 4 compartments, filled with bud-shaped, black seeds about 4 mm long. Each box contains up to 800 seeds, which have an amazing ability to maintain excellent germination for decades. The first fruits appear on the bush in early July. In some varieties of dope boxes open up when dried, the seeds fall on the garden bed. To collect them in time, you must use protective bags, such as gauze.

Branched, taproot is deep in the ground, reliably nourishing the plant. He also has properties that are valuable for pharmacology.

Species, varieties of plants

Unpretentious flower grows well in different climatic conditions. It is suitable tropical, subtropical, temperate climate. Florists are known plants with double, semi-double bells of different shades. According to the classification of botanists, there are 13 types of dope. The main types are listed below.

Datura ordinary (Datura stramonium)

For the first time this kind of dope was described by the famous scholar Carl Linnaeus, giving him a Latin name based on the meanings of the Greek words “Nightshade” and “Insane”. Seeds of this species showed 90% germination after 40 years of storage. In Siberia, in the Far East, in the southern regions of Russia, white bells of a plant with a peculiar smell are well known. There are several forms of datura ordinary, including species with purple flowers. Some peoples call it the blue Datura. The fruits of the plant Datura stramonium Inermis do not have thorns. It is popular with flower lovers.

Brugmansia

This species is now highlighted by a separate genus. Often on sale seeds of a plant are offered under the name datur. The difference is their flowers hanging down to the ground. At Datura bells are looking up. The fruits of all types of Brugmansia have no thorns, spines. Perennial tree plant has differences in agrotechnical cultivation and care.

Planting in the ground

The poisonous properties of the plant require careful selection of the landing site. Do not place dope on the flower beds, located next to the playgrounds. Beautiful flowers will not be left without their curious attention.

Datura grows on any type of soil, but preferably with a neutral and slightly alkaline reaction. To get rid of excess acidity helps the treatment of beds of lime, dolomite flour. The land should be fertile, loose. The pit should be made at least 70 cm deep with drainage. In early June, planted seedlings are planted. At the same time, they try not to disturb the earthen room that supports the injured roots.

In close landings dope develops worse. An adult shrub of the plant occupies a large space, closing places with faded spring perennials (tulips, daffodils, hyacinths). It looks good both in single and in group plantings. If you place a dope on a compost heap, it will look like a blooming flower bed.

In areas with a cool climate dope is often grown in containers, large pots, tubs. In the autumn they are transported to the veranda, greenhouse, balcony, to another room. Continue to grow as a perennial plant.

Seed growing

By the end of February, the dope's seeds are soaked for 3 days with warm water. Seeds germinate poorly. Therefore, experts advise to add a few drops of the drug that can stimulate growth. On a pre-prepared moist mixture (2 parts of fertile ground treated from weeds, 1 part of sand, 2 parts of overheated organic matter) spread the seeds, lightly sprinkle with soil. Cover with foil, placed in a dimly lit place for a week. The temperature for seed germination is maintained at about 20 degrees. The soil in the container should always be wet.

When germination of seedlings (after about 2 weeks), containers are transferred to a bright window sill. Gentle plants air, water. After disclosing 2 true leaves, seedlings are seated in prepared containers. After reaching a height of about 15 cm, the seedlings are considered ready for transfer to an open bed. It is best to use your own seeds for planting, taken from the strongest flowers on the bush. It is important to remember that seeds of hybrid varieties can lose their properties.

Pests, diseases

In the thickened thickets gray mold develops. Weevils, spider mites, bugs, whitefly settle on the tops of bushes. The use of modern insecticidal drugs helps to quickly defeat pests.

Using the advice of experts, you can safely grow on the site of an ancient magical plant, admiring its extraordinary evening beauty. If necessary, the flower from the legends comes to the rescue to restore human health.

Use in landscape design

Datura ordinary - a self-sufficient culture that does not need companions. Best of all looks in single landings against a lawn. Interesting dozens of different sorts, planted in a row. For example, plants with simple white flowers alternating with plants with terry lilac flowers.

It is possible to grow datur and in containers, only the variety should be srednerosly (up to 40 cm), preferably with large (up to 10 cm) flowers. Before flowering, the container with the plant is located somewhere in the garden, and with the beginning of flowering is put in the foreground.

Datura refers to those plants that are interesting not only flowers but also fruits. Shoots with "prickly cones" are widely used in floristic compositions.
